How to Build a More Profitable Window Cleaning Round
A bigger round isn't automatically a better one. Profit comes from density, frequency and the right customers — here's how to build a round that pays well per hour, not just per week.
Writes about operations, rounds and running the day-to-day of a cleaning business.

It's easy to confuse a busy round with a profitable one. Plenty of cleaners are flat-out six days a week and still not making the money they should, because the round is spread too thin, priced too low, or full of customers who cost more than they're worth. Profit isn't about more jobs — it's about more money per hour worked, including the time you spend driving and quoting.
1. Density is everything
The single biggest lever on profit is how close your jobs are to each other. Ten houses on one street pays far more per hour than ten houses spread across a town, because the unpaid time — driving, parking, setting up — collapses. Every new customer in a postcode you already serve is worth more than a customer two towns over, even at the same price.
- Prioritise booking new work near your existing clusters, even if it means saying no to scattered jobs.
- Group the round by area so a day's work is a tight loop, not a tour of the county.
- Track drive time as a real cost — it's the margin you can't see on the invoice.
2. Price to a target hourly rate
Decide what an hour of your time is worth — on the glass and in the van — and price backwards from it. A job isn't "£20"; it's "£20 for 25 minutes plus ten minutes' driving", which tells you the real rate. If a job can't hit your target once travel and setup are counted, it's either underpriced or too far away. The pricing guide walks through setting that number.
3. Protect the minimum charge
Small jobs quietly drag down your average. A £7 job that needs a stop and a setup pays terribly per hour no matter how fast you clean. A firm minimum — set to the visit, not the window count — keeps the floor under your profitability. This matters whether you price per window or per property; see per-window vs property-based pricing.
4. Frequency compounds
A 4-weekly customer is worth roughly twice an 8-weekly one for the same door — same travel, double the revenue. Nudging willing customers onto a tighter frequency, and defaulting new quotes to your preferred interval, is one of the easiest profit gains available. Occasional one-off cleans should carry a premium to cover the lack of repeat work.
Winning a customer costs far more than keeping one. A round that loses 20% of its customers a year is running up a down escalator. Reliable visits, a quick heads-up before you come, and easy payment keep people on the round — see reducing cancellations below.
5. Customer quality beats customer count
Not every customer is worth having. The ones who message to skip every other clean, haggle the price, or pay late can cost you more in hassle than they bring in. As the round matures, trade them out for dense, reliable, on-frequency work. A smaller round of good customers can out-earn a bigger round of awkward ones.
6. Cut the unpaid admin
Evenings spent quoting, chasing payments and remembering who's due are hours you're not paid for and can't bill. Automating the quote, the reminders and the collection turns that dead time back into either earning time or your own time. If you're weighing up tools, the best window cleaning software guide covers what each type actually does, and getting paid on time tackles the cash-flow side.
Build it deliberately
A profitable round is designed, not accumulated: dense clusters, prices set to an hourly target, a firm minimum, tight frequencies, good customers and as little unpaid admin as possible. Get those right and you can earn more from a smaller, calmer round than from one that keeps you out every daylight hour.
Quoting instantly and keeping leads in one place is part of that — it's less evening admin and more jobs won near the work you already have. You can see how Squeegify handles quoting and leads, or put a preview on your own site.
Put what you just read to work while you're out cleaning.
You came here to get better at the trade. Squeegify turns that knowledge into a quote form on your own website — so visitors price themselves, book a slot, and drop into your inbox while you're on the ladder. No more lost enquiries because you couldn't answer the phone.
