Window Cleaning Canvassing: Scripts That Actually Get Signups

Knocking doors still fills rounds faster than anything else. Here's the timing, the script and the follow-up that turn a maybe into a customer.

Canvassing still fills a round faster than any other method, because you are standing in front of the property while you quote it. The formula is simple: knock streets next to work you already have, go out between 4pm and 7pm on weekdays or mid-morning on Saturdays, give a price on the spot, and get a start date rather than a maybe.

Where to knock

  • The four streets around a customer you already clean — density is worth more than volume.
  • Estates with similar house types, so your pricing is quick and consistent.
  • Streets where you can see other clean windows — proof the area buys the service.
  • Skip flats above ground floor, gated blocks, and anything you cannot service safely.

A doorstep script

"Hi, I'm Sam — I clean windows on Oakfield Road just behind you and I'm picking up a few more houses on this street. For a house like yours it'd be £24 including frames, sills and both doors, every four weeks. I'm here next Tuesday if you'd like me to start with yours."

It works because it is short, it proves you are local, it names a price, and it ends with a specific date instead of a question they can defer.

The five objections you will hear

  1. "We already have someone." — Ask when they last came. Half the time the answer is 'months ago'. Leave a card.
  2. "Too expensive." — Do not drop the price. Offer 8-weekly instead so the yearly cost falls.
  3. "I need to ask my husband/wife." — Offer to text the quote so they can decide together tonight.
  4. "Just the front." — Take it. Front-only customers frequently upgrade after two visits.
  5. "Leave a leaflet." — Fine, but write the price on it by hand. Priced leaflets convert far better than blank ones.
Look like a business

Branded polo, clean van, a card with a real website on it. On the doorstep, looking established beats being cheap — you are asking a stranger for access to their home.

Follow-up is where the money is

Most signups are lost after the door closes, not at it. Text every 'maybe' the same evening with the price and a booking link. Text again seven days later, once. That single follow-up habit typically recovers a meaningful share of the doors that went cold.

Let the street quote itself

You cannot knock every door, and plenty of people are not in when you call. If your leaflets and cards send people to a page that quotes them instantly, the houses you missed can still sign up at 9pm without you being there.
